BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Who this is for
Store operators or technical teams evaluating Shippo or the current shipping route.
What you will leave with
A parcel contract, no-purchase test log, status map and an owned delivery-exception procedure.
Scope of this guide
An editorial pilot with proposed acceptance cases. Use controlled records, record actual results, and check your current account before expanding.

01 / Name the shipping bottleneck

Choose one recurring problem: preparing labels, choosing a service, returning tracking to the store or answering delivery questions. Record the current origin, parcel types, destinations and fulfillment owner. Avoid expanding the scope to every carrier or API feature before the ordinary shipping job is understood. The pilot should finish with a dependable operating decision for a representative route.

02 / Choose the application or integration route

Compare the provider's documented shipping application with an API or connected-system route only when the team can maintain the latter. Record authentication ownership, current account access and the exact source of orders. A developer-friendly option and a merchant-facing interface can require different support and recovery work, even when both eventually produce the same label.

03 / Write the parcel data contract

List order and shipment references, address, origin, package dimensions, weight, units, contents and requested service. Identify the authoritative source for each value. Include a multi-item parcel and a missing dimension. Have the fulfillment operator review the packed-shipment assumptions. Product-level data copied from a catalog should not silently become the parcel description used to purchase a service.

04 / Check current carrier and destination eligibility

Verify the chosen carrier, service, origin and destination against the actual account and parcel. Record relevant requirements and operating exclusions. Include a destination the business does not serve. A platform's broad carrier coverage is a starting point for investigation, while the acceptance test belongs to the specific route and billing arrangement the merchant will use.

05 / Compare complete service costs

Use the same controlled parcel and destination to compare quoted charges, optional services, platform costs and possible adjustments under current terms. Record delivery expectations separately from contractual guarantees. Add packaging and active operator time. A remembered discount or a rate from a different parcel should not determine which service is accepted for the current order.

06 / Keep the first test free of unintended purchases

Use documented test facilities or a written no-purchase walkthrough until the team understands which action creates a charge. If a physical sample is necessary, have the business approve that purchase separately. Include invalid address data and a repeated request in the early test. The objective is to inspect the decision and handoff, not buy postage while uncertainty remains.

07 / Map the shipment milestones

Record label preparation, postage commitment, parcel packing, carrier acceptance and delivery as distinct events. Define which event changes the order's public status. Include a label that exists while the parcel remains in the warehouse. Check the customer-facing message and the evidence visible to support so a technically successful label action does not become an unsupported shipped or delivered promise.

08 / Test tracking and delayed information

Document how tracking reaches the store and the support owner under the selected setup. Include delayed, repeated and inconsistent updates as proposed acceptance cases, then observe actual behavior. Preserve stable shipment references. The receiving operator should be able to distinguish ordinary waiting for new carrier evidence from a failed connection that needs investigation.

09 / Handle address changes and delivery trouble

Use a controlled changed address, unaccepted parcel and delayed delivery. Write what can still be corrected, what requires the carrier or provider, and who informs the customer. Verify the current account and service procedures before promising a particular outcome. Keep the customer's latest request and the physical shipment state available together.

10 / Inspect returns and label corrections

Walk through an ordinary return request and an unused or incorrect label using a non-purchasing test method where appropriate. Check the applicable current procedure, access and evidence needed. Preserve the link to the original order and shipment. An operational rollback should explain both the system record and any financial or physical action still requiring the authorized merchant.

11 / Recover one uncertain result

Prepare a case where an action may have succeeded but its confirmation is unavailable. Before repeating it, inspect existing shipments and the source order. Have a backup operator follow the documented recovery procedure. Record the evidence that permits a retry and the condition that requires stopping. This check prevents accidental duplicate labels, repeated charges and duplicate dispatches.

12 / Accept the supported parcel route

Reconcile the controlled orders, parcels, selected services, dispatch records and support outcomes. Count incorrect fields, unexplained status differences, active handling and current cost assumptions. Compare the same cases with the present method. Retain the new route only when the responsible operator can explain and recover the whole shipment, including its ordinary delivery exceptions.

THE PRACTICAL TAKEAWAY

A label, a dispatch and a delivery are different evidence. Keep all three connected to the order and the person who handles exceptions.
