- Who this is for
- B2B teams choosing a source or enrichment process for a specific segment and field gap.
- What you will leave with
- A shortlist tied to the actual research question and a common test method.
- Scope of this guide
- Documentation-based comparison and editorial test design. These are research options with different scopes, not a ranking or a hands-on benchmark. Confirm the current account and plan details.

Start with the missing decision input
Write the field that would change a business decision: company identity, role relevance, or a usable business contact detail. Check the current CRM and manual research first. There is no benefit in repeatedly purchasing information the team already has but cannot locate.
Compare the relevant product scope
The products overlap in parts of B2B research, but the following starting points are not feature-for-feature equivalence. Entries are alphabetical, not ranked.
| Candidate | Job to investigate | Critical check |
|---|---|---|
| Apollo | Account/contact research and a wider sales workflow | Coverage and exact CRM sync behavior |
| Clay | A maintained sequence of enrichment sources | Provider order, provenance, reruns, and combined usage |
| Hunter | Known-domain or named-contact email research | Correct business identity and result status |
| Lusha | Contact/company prospecting and enrichment | Segment match quality and reviewed exports |
| Existing CRM / manual research | A small known information gap | Actual missing fields and total manual effort |
Use one representative sample
Define the same permitted companies, roles, required fields, and acceptance rules for every candidate. Include missing values, stale roles, duplicate companies, and uncertain matches. Record what each tool can and cannot answer, rather than changing the question to flatter a particular result.
Inspect accepted values and provenance
Measure usable coverage separately from match accuracy. Retain the source, review date, and uncertainty when available, and note when evidence is missing. A filled cell is not an accepted record if the company or person is wrong.
Protect the destination before connecting it
Review proposed additions in an isolated queue first. Specify authoritative fields, overwrite rules, suppression state, deletion behavior, and the responsible reviewer. Test connector behavior independently; similar product categories do not mean identical sync semantics.
Compare total cost per accepted result
Use observed search, reveal, verification, or provider usage for the actual trial. Add rejected work, corrections, monitoring, and current plan cost. Avoid choosing solely by a quoted credit count because the units and actions may differ between providers.
Keep the shortlist provisional
Select the source or workflow that meets the defined field and quality need at a maintainable cost. Verify intended data use separately from discovering it. Reassess when the segment, data source, plan, or destination behavior changes; do not present a pilot as proof of universal coverage.
The strongest B2B research option is the one that produces accepted information for your specific decision.
